along front street, there is a banyan tree which was planted in 1873 that provides approximately one acre of shade. according to the sign, "the tree has spread over the area by way of its aerial roots, which grow into thick trunks when they reach the ground, supporting the tree's large canopy. there are 16 major trunks in addition to the main trunk in the center. i do have to admit, the tree was rather impressive.
tuesday, we took the road to hana. to get to hana, which is on the eastern side of the island, you have to take a long windy road, but you get to see amazing scenery along the way. this is one of the least populated parts of the island.
for those of you who know decker canyon, i would say it is similar in the twist and turn category, but the road was even more narrow with many one lane wide bridges. words cannot describe the beauty and the few pictures i have included below will not do the road to hana justice. the road leads to the oheo pools, also called the seven sacred pools in relation to some hawaiian folklore about characteristics one is supposed to embody. it started to rain when we were there, so i have a less than ideal picture below of two of the pools with the waterfalls running into them. (note: some of these pictures are my attempts to be artistic)
